Concrete slabs or paving slabs is one of the most common questions we get from customers planning a new patio, path, driveway or hard standing area near Gainsborough. Both terms get used loosely and are sometimes treated as the same thing, but they are built differently, priced differently, and suited to different jobs. This guide sets out the real differences in plain terms, so you buy the right one first time rather than finding out the hard way.

What Is the Difference Between Concrete Slabs and Paving Slabs?

"Paving slabs" is often used as an umbrella term covering natural stone (sandstone, granite, slate) and decorative concrete-composite slabs with a textured, riven or coloured finish, designed primarily to be seen. "Concrete slabs" in the sense we supply are solid, steel-reinforced units cast for strength rather than appearance, in practical sizes including 600x600mm, 600x450mm and 600x300mm. Decorative paving is thinner and finished for looks. Our concrete slabs are built to be walked on, driven over and built on.

Strength and Load: What Each One Is Built For

This is where the two genuinely part ways. Most decorative paving slabs are rated for foot traffic and light garden furniture only. Put a car, trailer or piece of machinery on them regularly and they crack, chip at the edges, or rock loose over time, especially once frost gets into hairline cracks in a British winter. Steel-reinforced concrete slabs are a different proposition: they are made to take vehicle movement, so they work as a driveway apron, a hard standing area, a base for a shed or outbuilding, or a yard surface for agricultural equipment.

The Simple Test
If a vehicle, trailer or heavy machinery will ever cross it, steel-reinforced concrete slabs are built for the job. Decorative paving slabs are not.

Looks and Finish

Paving slabs win on appearance. They come in a wide range of colours, textures and finishes, from riven natural stone to smooth contemporary porcelain-effect composites, and they are the obvious choice for a patio you want to show off. Our concrete slabs are plain and uniform in colour, with a consistent, functional finish. They are not trying to be decorative. They are designed to do a job invisibly, underfoot or under a vehicle, and to keep doing it for decades.

Cost and Lifespan

Decorative paving, particularly natural stone or higher-end composite ranges, usually costs more per square metre up front, and some finishes need sealing to resist staining and algae growth in damp Lincolnshire weather. Steel-reinforced concrete slabs are generally more cost-effective per square metre, and because they are solid and reinforced rather than surface-finished, quality slabs last 30 years or more with nothing more than the occasional pressure wash. There is nothing to seal and nothing that flakes. You can see our current rates on the prices page.

Which Should You Choose for Your Project?

In practice, most customers do not need to pick just one. It comes down to what the surface has to do:

  • A patio or path you want to look good: decorative paving slabs, where the extra cost buys you the finish.
  • A driveway apron, hard standing, trailer parking or yard area: steel-reinforced concrete slabs, where load-bearing strength matters more than looks.
  • A shed, summerhouse or outbuilding base: concrete slabs laid on compacted hardcore and sand, for a flat, stable, long-lasting base. Our guide on using concrete slabs as a shed base covers this in more detail.
  • Finishing off a new fence line: concrete slabs also work well as a simple hard edge behind concrete fence posts and gravel boards, particularly on farms and rural boundaries where ground gets churned up. We cover that ground in our piece on concrete fencing for farms and rural properties.

A lot of gardens end up using both: decorative paving for the visible patio or entrance, and plain steel-reinforced concrete slabs for the practical areas nobody photographs but everybody relies on, like a shed base, a bin store, or hard standing behind a gate. If you are supplying for a trade job or a larger site, our trade page covers bulk pricing and delivery.

So, concrete slabs or paving slabs? If it needs to look good and only ever sees feet, paving slabs are worth the extra cost. If it needs to carry weight, last decades with no maintenance, and cost less doing it, steel-reinforced concrete slabs are the practical choice. We stock concrete slabs in a range of sizes from our base near Gainsborough, with delivery across Lincolnshire, South Yorkshire and North Nottinghamshire.
