One of the most common questions we get from customers across Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire is how to fit gravel boards to concrete fence posts. It is a straightforward job, but it is worth doing properly. Gravel boards sit at the base of your fence, keeping your panels clear of soil, standing water, and the general moisture that causes timber to rot from the bottom up. Done correctly, they can add years to the life of your fence. Here is everything you need to know.
What Are Gravel Boards and Why Do They Matter?
Gravel boards are horizontal boards that run along the bottom of a fence bay, between the posts and just above ground level. Their job is simple: they act as a sacrificial barrier between the soil and your fence panels. Even if moisture eventually degrades the gravel board, the panel above stays protected and dry.
Concrete gravel boards are by far the best option. They will never rot, warp, or split the way timber gravel boards do, and they need no maintenance whatsoever once installed. We supply them to customers across the East Midlands, and they are a natural partner for our slotted concrete fence posts.
What You Need Before You Start
Before fitting your gravel boards, make sure your concrete fence posts are already installed, set in concrete, and fully cured. The posts need to be solid before any boards or panels go in. If you are installing posts at the same time, allow at least 24 to 48 hours for the post-mix concrete to set before loading the posts with panels and boards.
For the job itself, you will need:
- Concrete gravel boards cut to the correct bay width (typically 1.83m for a standard 6ft panel bay)
- A helper, especially for longer runs
- A rubber mallet or piece of timber to tap boards into place without cracking them
- A spirit level
- Gravel or a thin bed of sharp sand to level the ground under the board if needed
That is it. No fixings, no adhesive, no specialist tools. The slotted design of concrete posts means the boards simply slide in.
Step-by-Step: How to Fit Gravel Boards to Concrete Fence Posts
Fitting concrete gravel boards to slotted concrete posts is a two-person job for longer fence runs, but can be managed solo for a bay or two. Here is the process:
- Check your ground level. The gravel board should sit just above the soil surface, not buried in it. If the ground is uneven, use a small amount of sharp sand or fine gravel to create a level bed under the board. A board that sits unevenly will put stress on the slots and can cause the post to lean over time.
- Slide the gravel board into the post slots. Slotted concrete posts have channels on each face designed to accept gravel boards and fence panels. The gravel board slides into the bottom slot. With one person holding each end, angle the board slightly and feed one end into the slot on the first post, then work the other end into the slot on the second post. It should sit snugly without forcing.
- Tap into position if needed. If the board is tight, use a rubber mallet and a scrap piece of timber to gently tap it down into the slots. Never strike the board directly with a metal hammer, as concrete can chip or crack under a concentrated impact.
- Check it is level. Place a spirit level along the top edge of the gravel board. A level board means your fence panel will sit straight above it. If the board tilts, adjust the sand or gravel beneath it until it sits true.
- Fit the fence panel above. Once the gravel board is in place, the fence panel slides into the same slots directly above it. The panel should rest on top of the gravel board, not on the ground. This is the whole point: the panel never touches the soil.
- Repeat for each bay. Work along your fence run, fitting a gravel board and panel in each bay between posts.
How High Should a Gravel Board Sit?
The gravel board should be positioned so its bottom edge sits at or just above ground level, with a small gap between the underside of the board and the soil if possible. The aim is to keep the board clear of standing water after heavy rain. In practice, most customers in the heavier clay soils around Gainsborough and the Lincolnshire Wolds find that positioning the board so its base sits approximately 10 to 20mm above the soil level works well.
If the board is buried even slightly in the ground, moisture will wick up into it constantly. For timber gravel boards this would cause rot within a few years. For concrete boards it is not a structural problem, but it can look untidy and makes the board harder to replace later if you ever need to.
Can You Fit Gravel Boards to Existing Posts?
Yes, provided you are using slotted concrete posts. The board simply slides into the slot from above, so there is no need to remove the posts or lift the fence panels. You can slide the gravel board down the slot alongside the existing panel, positioning it at the base before lowering the panel down to rest on top of it.
If you are working with intermediate posts (posts with slots on both faces) versus end or corner posts (which have slots on only one or two faces), the fitting method is the same. Just ensure the board reaches into the slot on both adjacent posts before seating it level.
Tips for a Long-Lasting Installation
A few extra steps at installation time will make your fence look better and last longer. First, consider backfilling around the base of each post with angular gravel or clean stone rather than the original soil. This helps water drain away from the post base quickly rather than pooling around it. Second, if your fence runs alongside a garden bed, try to keep the soil level behind the gravel board below the top of the board, not heaped up against it. Soil pressed against the fence creates a constant moisture source.
For customers across the East Midlands dealing with the heavier, wetter soils common in the region, these steps make a genuine difference to how the fence performs over the years.
