If you are choosing between concrete and timber for your next fencing project, one of the first questions you are likely to ask is how long do concrete fence posts actually last? It is a fair question, because fence posts are not a purchase you want to repeat every few years. The short answer is that a quality steel-reinforced concrete post will last decades. In many cases, it will still be standing long after the fence panels it holds have been replaced more than once.

The Short Answer: 30 Years or More

A well-made, steel-reinforced concrete fence post installed correctly can easily last 30 years, and many last considerably longer. We supply customers right across Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire, and it is not uncommon to see concrete posts that have been in the ground for 40 or 50 years and are still performing perfectly well.

Lifespan at a Glance
Steel-reinforced concrete fence posts: 30 to 50+ years
Treated timber fence posts: 10 to 15 years

That is a significant difference, and it is one of the main reasons so many homeowners, farmers, and builders in the East Midlands now choose concrete as their first choice for permanent boundary fencing.

What Makes Concrete Posts Last So Long?

Concrete is simply a more durable material for this application than timber. There are a few key reasons why concrete fence posts outlast everything else in the ground.

First, concrete does not rot. Timber posts fail primarily because of moisture and microbial decay. Even pressure-treated timber cannot hold off rot indefinitely, especially at the base of the post where it meets the soil. Concrete is not affected by moisture in the same way and will not break down through fungal or bacterial action.

Second, concrete is not attacked by insects. Woodworm, ants, and other wood-boring insects that weaken timber posts are simply not interested in concrete.

Third, our posts are steel-reinforced throughout. The steel reinforcement adds tensile strength that plain concrete lacks, meaning the post resists bending, cracking, and the gradual movement that soil pressure and wind loading create over the years. A post without steel inside is far more likely to fracture under stress.

How Long Do Timber Posts Last by Comparison?

Treated softwood fence posts typically last between 10 and 15 years in typical UK conditions. In wetter, heavier soils like the clay ground common across much of Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire, that figure can be closer to 8 to 10 years before the post begins to soften, split, or lean.

That means over a 30-year period, you could easily replace timber posts two or three times. Each replacement involves digging out the old post, disposing of it, purchasing new posts, and reinstalling them - none of which is cheap or convenient. Concrete, by contrast, is largely a one-time purchase.

Do Concrete Fence Posts Need Any Maintenance to Last?

No, and this is one of the biggest advantages concrete has over any alternative. Once a concrete post is set correctly in the ground, it requires no painting, no treatment, no sealing, and no inspection regime. You simply forget about it.

This is particularly valuable for agricultural and rural properties around Gainsborough and the wider East Midlands, where boundary fencing might cover large runs that would take considerable time to inspect and maintain if timber were used. Concrete posts let you install and move on.

That said, pairing your concrete posts with concrete gravel boards at the base is strongly recommended. Gravel boards take the brunt of soil moisture and ground-level damage so your fence panels do not have to, extending the overall life of your fence significantly.

What Can Shorten the Life of a Concrete Fence Post?

While concrete posts are highly durable, there are a few things that can cause problems:

  • Inadequate depth: Posts that are not set deep enough will rock and loosen over time as wind moves the fence panels. The standard rule is to bury one third of the total post length - around 2ft 6in for an 8ft post. Skimping on depth is the most common installation mistake.
  • Poor quality concrete: If you are setting posts in concrete, use a proper post-mix rather than watered-down ballast. Weak concrete around the base allows the post to move and can eventually crack.
  • Physical impact: A concrete post that is struck hard by a vehicle or heavy machinery can crack or shatter. In most garden and property boundary applications this is not a concern, but it is worth noting for farm or yard settings.
  • Low-quality posts to begin with: Not all concrete posts are the same. Posts without adequate steel reinforcement, or made with inferior concrete mixes, will not last as long. Always buy from a reputable supplier.

Getting the Most from Your Concrete Posts

To make sure your concrete fence posts give you the full 30-plus years they are capable of, a few simple steps at the installation stage make a big difference.

Set them to the right depth - one third of the total length in the ground. Use fresh post-mix concrete and allow it to cure properly before loading up the fence panels. Use a spirit level to get each post perfectly vertical before the concrete sets. And fit concrete gravel boards at the base of each bay to keep soil and moisture away from the bottom of your fence panels.
